Kirpal Singh's Body Handed Over To India By Pak; Heart, Stomach Missing

Kirpal Singh's last rites will be performed on Wednesday in Gurdaspur.

Amritsar: The body of Indian prisoner Kirpal Singh, who died under mysterious circumstances at a Lahore jail last week, was handed over to Indian authorities by Pakistan on Tuesday.

The mystery over his death, however, continues as the postmortem conducted at Amritsar Medical College could not arrive at a conclusion over the cause of this death.

The autopsy, which was conducted by a team of three doctors, says there were no external or internal injury marks on the body.

The heart and stomach were missing as they had been taken out during the first autopsy conducted at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore. Doctors have preserved the viscera and sent it for lab tests to rule out poisoning.

"Prima-facie there is no foul play but we can say conclusively about his cause of death after getting reports from Jinnah hospital and viscera report," Dr Ashok Chanana, Head of autopsy team of Amritsar Medical College, said.

The body was handed over to the family after the postmortem; last rites will be performed on Wednesday in Gurdaspur.

Kirpal Singh was lodged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail, right next to that of Sarabjit's cell, who was killed in 2013 by Pakistani inmates.

Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur told NDTV, "I have written to the Government of India about 74 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails. They are under threat, especially two prisoners, Kuldeep Kumar from Ahmedabad and Ansari from Maharashtra."

Lahore jail authorities have returned all the belongings of Kirpal Singh to his family, which includes a letter which the prisoner couldn't post.

"(Written in Punjabi) I am not keeping well these days and you are not writing back any letters to me. Pleas hire a good lawyer as soon as possible to secure my release. Are you people waiting to see my dead body?"

In 1992, Kirpal Singh was caught by Pakistani Rangers near the India-Pakistan border. He was alleged to have been involved in a bombing at Faisalabad railway station and sentenced to death for spying and terrorism in Pakistan.
