Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has called for an all-party meeting today to discuss the demands of Jat community leaders
Chandigarh:
In view of tension in Haryana's Rohtak due to ongoing protest by the Jat community demanding reservation, the administration has blocked mobile internet services in the town since Thursday night. The protest by Jat community has entered sixth day today.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has called for an all-party meeting today to discuss the demands of Jat community leaders, who are agitating across the state seeking reservation in government jobs under Other Backward Classes or OBC category, State Agriculture Minister OP Dhankar had said on Thursday after an emergency Cabinet meeting.
He said the Cabinet has appealed to the agitating Jats to call off their protests in the larger interest of the state.
"The administration and police were fully alert to meet any eventuality and the government has kept all its options open to deal with the situation arising out of the ongoing stir," Mr Dhankar said.
Violence broke out during the protest in Rohtak on Thursday leaving at least 15 persons injured. Traders and advocates clashed outside a court in the town in which several vehicles were also damaged, police said.
Police and paramilitary forces resorted to lathicharge and teargas shells to control the situation after some unidentified people torched motorcycles and pelted stones during clashes.
Prohibitory orders have been clamped in Rohtak, banning assembly of five or more persons.
Some trains were reportedly running late and a few were also cancelled on Rohtak-Delhi section due to Jat agitation.
While the state government has promised to include Jats in the economically backward class giving them 20 per cent reservation, the community leaders have rejected the offer demanding inclusion in the OBC list.
