Relatives of Manjula Pai, who died in a hit and run accident in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, Gujarat:
Investigators have been accused of slipshod investigations and foul play in a hit and run case by a Mumbai based family, the incident happened in Ahmedabad last month.
On May 13, Manjula Pai's two-wheeler was hit by an unidentified vehicle at 9am near Rajpath club while she was on her way to work; she worked as a librarian in Ahmedabad. The 37 year old was rushed to a hospital after a passer-by called an ambulance, but she succumbed to her injuries later.
As per Ms Pai's last wishes, her eyes and liver were donated, but her family is distraught that those responsible for her death have not even been identified.
What has come as a shock for the Pai family, is that local police has cited lack of evidence in identifying the killer vehicle.
The family has refused to accept the police version that there was no witness to the incident, despite the mishap taking place in broad daylight. They have also raised questions about CCTV cameras installed in the club.
The victim's sister, Manisha Pai told NDTV, "She (Manjula) died on June 14... but we couldn't follow it up since our whole attention was on her condition... but later we were told that the police has failed to get any footage since the CCTV of the club was not working due to power failure during that 20 to 25 minutes duration."
Local police however deny these allegations.
The investigation officer MS Sheikh said, "The FSL has carried out examination at the spot... they have submitted their report... we had questioned people who could have witnessed the incident... but couldn't get any leads... and we also tried to obtain CCTV footage but it wasn't working since there was a power failure."
The family has now appealed to the state government to help and track down the alleged killers of the victim.
"We are struggling without her... nobody is doing anything to get justice for us... every channel, every politician says save the daughter... wasn't the life of my daughter precious," lamented the victim's mother Rajni Pai.
The Pai family is clearly finding it hard to accept police's claims.
