New Delhi:
National Kabbadi champion Rohit Chillar was arrested in Mumbai on Friday, three days after his wife Lalita hanged herself at their Delhi home alleging dowry harassment.
27-year-old Lalita Chillar was found hanging by her father on Monday evening in the apartment where she was living alone. She left audio recordings addressed to her husband and parents, and a note that said: "I'm not strong enough to survive this, I have decided to quit." She alleged that she had been tortured for dowry and beaten by her husband and his family.
The audio CD for her husband was two hours long. The pro-kabaddi player put out his own video, denying tearfully that he ever harmed anybody, least of all his wife.
"I can't imagine she is gone...I couldn't even see her for the last time," Rohit said in the recording he posted on Facebook.
"I played for the country, never harmed anybody..."
Rohit, who represents the "Bengaluru Bulls" in the Kabaddi league, has been charged with assisting Lalita's suicide. His father Vijay Singh had surrendered earlier.
"I am sure my wife did not say anything like this. My father-in-law knows too that I never asked for dowry," Rohit said in his video, weeping.
"I am alive only to prove my innocence. I never did anything wrong...When I get justice, I will go to (my wife)."
Lalita married Rohit in March. This was her second marriage. The kabbadi player joined the Navy in 2009 and was posted in Bengaluru.
Lalita reportedly said in her suicide note that she was forced to stay alone while her husband remained out of Delhi frequently. A senior police officer said, "Lalita said in the note that she was asked by her husband to leave him for his happiness, so she took this step."
