NDTV India Ban: Murder of Democracy, Says Amarinder Singh, Announces Dharna

Amarinder Singh said, party workers would stage a sit-in outside the Governor's house in Chandigarh.

Congress' Punjab chief Amarinder Singh has said that his party will hold a day-long protest on November 9 to coincide with the one-day ban on NDTV India if the Prime Minister fails to withdraw the order.

On the 'dark day for India's democracy', Mr Singh said, party workers would stage a sit-in outside the Governor's house in Chandigarh. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi must withdraw the authoritarian orders passed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

NDTV India has been told it must go off air on Wednesday as penalty for its coverage of the terror attack on the Pathankot Air Force base in January.

NDTV has refuted the claims that its Hindi channel provided sensitive information during the terror attack and has said its broadcast offered no details that were not reported by other channels and newspapers. "After the dark days of the emergency when the press was fettered, it is extraordinary that NDTV is being proceeded against in this manner," NDTV said, adding that it is considering all its options.

Speaking to reporters in Chandigarh, the former chief minister appealed to the media across the country to show solidarity with NDTV and come out on the streets against the repressive orders of the central government.

He said the ban was an attempt to rip apart the country's democratic fiber by stifling the free voice of the independent media, adding that the nation could not remain a mute spectator to this brazen murder of democracy and assault on free speech by the Modi government.

Reacting to the BJP stand that the ban order had been necessitated in the interest of national security, Mr Singh said, "Are you questioning the media's nationalism and patriotism?"

Mr Singh said the authoritarian crackdown on the independence of the media was symptomatic of the Modi government's dictatorial attitude and a complete disregard for the Constitutional rights.

Accusing the ruling Akali Dal of gaging the media in Punjab, Mr Singh said the Congress, once in power, will immediately unshackle the media from the control of Badals, Punjab's first family, and allow all media organisations equal opportunity to flourish and grow in a professional environment.
