Tasaduq Mufti, son of late Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, formally joined the ruling People's Democratic Party on occasion of his father's first death anniversary.
"I will work for peace and prosperity of the state where the common man and the VIPs will play and walk together," said Mr Mufti, 46, who has won many awards and acclaim for his work as a cinematographer in movies like
'Omkara' and
'Kaminey'.
"Today, I'm firmly siding with Mehbooba Mufti, her sincerity and truthfulness. I am confident and hopeful that we all will walk together," he added.
Mr Mufti - an alumnus of American Film Institute - was welcomed into the party by his sister and Jammu and Kashmir's incumbent Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti at Srinagar's Indoor Stadium, where the siblings paid homage to their late father.
"We are presenting you the dearest thing of Mufti
sahib. You may think he (Tasaduq Mufti) has come here to become famous. My father was proud of him. He earns Rs 5-10 lakh a day just by clicking pictures," the Chief Minister said, formally inducting her brother into the party.
"Tasaduq has his own identity and his own work. No one in Mumbai knew him as Mufti Sayeed's son till his second term (as Chief Minister). Like his father, he wants to do something for Jammu and Kashmir," Ms Mufti added.
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died a year ago at AIIMS after he was admitted due to severe infection. Despite speculations, Tasaduq Mufti did not join active politics then but firmly backed his sister Mehbooba Mufti.
Inducting Tasaduq Mufti into the party will further strengthen the Mufti family's hold on the PDP, which was formed in 1999 after Mufti Mohammad Sayeed quit the Congress. Sources say Mr Mufti may contest the bypoll for the Anantnag parliamentary constituency, vacated by Mehbooba Mufti.
"I have remained aloof from politics all my life. But today, I have joined the PDP officially and it is a very important day of my life. I will walk with you and take your aspirations along," he addressed the party workers and thanked them for their support.
