The producer of a tele-serial allegedly insulting Valmiki community, and the channel in which it was aired, will have to face trial, the Supreme Court has said.
The court dismissed the appeal filed by producer Rajan Sahai and Star Plus TV channel for quashing the police case filed following a complaints by the members of the Valmiki community
The serial, "Bidaai" was aired in August 2009, after which a First Information Report or FIR was filed.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also issued a showcause notice in September 2009, seeking an explanation from the channel.
The producer and the channel then approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, asking that the FIR be quashed and claiming that the programme did not offended the Valmiki community. The court dismissed the petition and asked the producer and the channel to face trial.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court's decision.
