"I think it's not only about netizens, it's also about citizens. You have many websites now, you have e-shopping and you have start-ups on web now. You have a lot of youngsters doing a lot of business over the internet. The concern is if the internet is charged for these over the top services, what will happen to these smaller businesses?" Mr Thackeray said to NDTV.

He added that he would ask the party's lawmakers to raise the issue in Parliament, and that he believes all parties across the country should come together to stop what he termed an attempt to kill net neutrality.

"The internet has gone beyond the economic strata and economic divide. The urban-rural is divide is slowly being bridged because of this. If we kill net neutrality, we will reverse this too," said Aditya Thackeray.

Over three lakh people have emailed TRAI to share their views on net neutrality, through a campaign on SaveTheInternet.in, a website setup by a group working to spread awareness about net neutrality in India.
