Vijayawada:
A private bus fell off a bridge into a canal in Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh early this morning, killing eight people and leaving over 30 injured. The driver was allegedly drowsy and lost control of the Volvo bus, which was heading from Bhubaneswar to Hyderabad.
At least 10 of the injured are reportedly critical. They are being treated at a government hospital nearby. Gas cutters were used to pull out passengers from the wrecked vehicle.
The bus was to cover a distance of over 1,000 km and had made a stop at Vijayawada, where a new driver took over.
At around 5.30 am, the bus overran a bridge divider and plunged through the gap between the two lanes into the canal.
The front of the bus is smashed and many were believed to be trapped in that part.
