Bihar Lawmaker Manorama Devi Surrenders Day After Nitish Kumar Lost His Cool

Gaya: Manorama Devi, the Bihar lawmaker who had gone into hiding after an arrest warrant over a liquor stash found inside her home, surrendered this morning. Her son Rocky Yadav was arrested last week for a road rage killing.

"I am being framed," said the ruling party lawmaker suspended by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar last week.

Her surrender comes a day after the Chief Minister lost his cool and snapped at journalists when asked why politicians linked to his party were in the centre of big crimes.

Manorama Devi has been sent to jail for 14 days. "I have requested the court that since she is not well she be given medicines and rest in jail," said Qaiser Sarfuddin, her lawyer.

Bihar police sources have said they will soon take her into custody to question her.

Manorama Devi, a legislative council member of the ruling JD(U) or Janata Dal-United, has been charged with violating a new prohibition law in the state. Liquor bottles were found at her house in Gaya when the police were searching for her son Rocky, who had run away after allegedly killing a teenager for overtaking his Range Rover earlier this month.

Rocky Yadav allegedly fired at 19-year-old Aditya Sachdeva's car to force him to stop, beat him up and then shot him dead.

On Monday, Nitish Kumar lost his temper when asked why the Bihar Police had failed to track down Manorama Devi for nearly a week. "What does this question mean? What is the logic? Does it mean someone will be caught when I want it and won't be caught when I don't want it? Then I should also be in jail. We are not showing leniency to anyone," Mr Kumar fumed.
