At least four gunmen were killed after two teams of terrorists launched an attack on the Air Force base in Punjab's Pathankot on Saturday morning, authorities said. Two more were holed up in the administrative block of the base. After an operation to neutralise the attackers that lasted for more than 60 hours, all six terrorists have now been shot dead. Combing operations to secure the area are still on.

With nightfall, guns fall silent at Pathankot
After intermittent firing and occasional sounds of explosion since 3 pm on Sunday, guns have fallen silent at the Pathankot air force station, reports NDTV's Sudhi Ranjan Sen.

Active operations seem to have been wrapped up for the day with at least one more terrorist killed during the day. Four were killed yesterday.

Authorities however are yet to confirm the death of any terrorists today, waiting for the bodies to be recovered.

Extreme caution needs to be exercised in removing the bodies amid concerns of booby traps and explosives. Indian forces don't want to take undue risks and seem to be in favour of wrapping up operations in daylight tomorrow, sources say.

The Operation Continues: Four terrorists have been killed, however,  the operation to sanitise the air base continues. As per the reports three security personnel have died, but the number of deaths could go higher, sources told NDTV.

Due to effective preparation and coordinated efforts by all security agencies terrorists were detected by aerial surveillance, Indian Air Force said in a statement.

Intelligence inputs had been available of a likely attempt by terrorists to infiltrate into the military installation in Pathankot area, the statement said.

Security Stepped Up In Delhi After Terrorists Attack Air For Base In Punjab's Pathankot
Security was stepped up in the national capital today in the wake of the terrorist attack at an Air Force Base in Pathankot that left four terrorists killed and two Air Force personnel martyred. Security has been significantly heightened at the airport, railway stations, bus stands and other vital installations in the city.

Pathankot and surrounding areas have been put under high alert, and security has been tightened across Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir.


According to official sources, Intelligence officials picked up inputs and alerted the military about the attack after calls were reportedly made by the terrorists to Pakistan.
The Jammu-Pathankot highway is strategically important for the Armed Forces, with a number of key Army and Air Force bases along the highway.
According to official sources, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held a high-level briefing with senior military officials after intelligence inputs had alerted security forces of a possible terror attack in Pathankot on Friday.
At least 6 terrorists launched the attack, out of whom 2 have been killed by security forces. 4 terrorists are still holed up inside a building. Gunfire is being heard from inside the air base and reports suggest the terrorists have been contained in a non-operational area of the facility.
According to reports, the terrorists entered the Pathankot Air Base wearing military uniform, used official vehicle.
The attack comes within six months of the Gurdaspur terrorist strike where three terrorists equipped with grenades and AK-47s, opened fire in Dinanagar killing three civilians. This is the second terror attack in Punjab in the last 6 months.
The strike is being suspected to have been launched by the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed who wanted to damage military assets in the area officials said.
According to official sources, intelligence inputs had alerted security forces of a possible terror attack on Friday following which the security had been increased in the area.


The National Security Guard or the NSG has been called in, authorities said. Helicopters have also dispatched to the area for assistance in operation.
The technical area where MiG 29 fighter aircraft and helicopters are kept is safe, officials said.
The gunfire started at around 3:30 am, authorities said, adding that an official car was used to launch the attack. The incident is being seen as connected to the hijacking of a police car a day ago.
