Trinamool Leader Opens Fire From Car After 'Hit-And-Run', 2 Killed

Pabitra Roy was produced at the Malda Court today at 1:00 pm. The police asked for eight days custody. The court gave three days.

Malda: A leader of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress has been sent to police custody for three days for allegedly shooting dead two teenagers when he fired at a crowd of people that stopped his vehicle after it hit a cyclist.

Asim Mondal, 19, died on the spot at Malda when Trinamool's Panchayat Samiti or rural body chief Pabitra Roy allegedly opened fire around 4 pm yesterday.

Rahul Paswan, 17, died while he was being taken to hospital in Kolkata.

The cyclist hit by Mr Roy's car was only slightly injured. But when the car tried to speed away, a crowd chased and caught it. Mr Roy allegedly rolled down the window glass and fired at random upon the crowd.

Pabitra Roy was arrested late last night by the Malda police. The Trinamool has suspended him today.

"Law is equal for the people and there will be swift action taken. The Trinamool member is arrested and suspended. Zero tolerance for such issues," party lawmaker Derek O'Brien said.

Mr Roy was produced at the Malda Court today at 1:00 pm. The police asked for eight days custody. The court gave three days.

Police are questioning Mr Roy about whether he personally opened fire or other passengers in the car did. Roy had a gun in his possession for which he had a licence.

Congress lawmaker Adhir Chowdhury said, "What the Trinamool is doing is wrong. We protest this and will oust them from power in 2016."
