A shot from the cellphone footage that shows Nashi Khan scolding the policeman.

New Delhi: Raising voice against the high-handed behaviour by a section of policemen in small towns, the daughter of a ruling Samajwadi Party lawmaker was recently seen pulling up a constable on the streets of Patiyali in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh.

A video of the incident which took place on July 31 -- shot on a in cellphone -- is being widely circulated locally. In the footage, Nashi Khan is seen berating the constable, who apparently bought some apples and refused to pay the vendor.

"When men in uniform turn into thieves, what can the public do? You are robbing this poor man. Was this the oath you took when you donned this uniform?" Ms Khan is heard saying in the footage. "You should be ashamed of yourself," she added.

In face of the public humiliation, the constable - identified as one Sushil -- later handed over the money to the vendor, Ms Khan told NDTV.

Asked if any action was initiated against the constable, Ms Khan, a 25-year-old lawyer who is also into social work, said, "We need to touch the hearts of people like him. Strong action like suspension or sacking will only be a punishment for his family."

Ms Khan is the daughter of lawmaker Najeeba Khan Zeenat, who represents Patiyali. She makes the rounds of the constituency regularly, acting as a representative of her mother and intermediary between her and the locals.
