Karimnagar, Telangana: Nothing can make seasoned politicians duck and run the way a bee attack does.
Top Telangana ministers had to make a quick dash and cover their faces after they came under sudden attack by a swarm of honey bees in a mango orchard yesterday.
Finance minister Etela Rajender and IT minister K T Rama Rao were inspecting a mango orchard in Karimnagar district after unseasonal rains and hailstorm caused extensive damage.
As the ministers, surrounded by several others, were examining the mangoes that had fallen off the trees, all of a sudden a swarm of bees from a nearby tree flew towards them. Panic-stricken officials and others covered their face and made a dash for their cars.
But this is not the first time that officials have come under bee-attack in Telangana.
Last month, officials and police personnel, who were waiting for Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to arrive, had to run helter-skelter at the Gajwel town helipad after coming under attack by a swarm of honey bees.
While the politicians and officials may not be too happy with the 'targeted' attack, perhaps environmentalist and agriculturists have good reason to cheer.
Bees incidentally are scientifically proven to be extremely important for a healthy flora. Seventy per cent of the world's top 100 food crops are pollinated by bees.
