Nilanjanaa topped the jazz category of the Golden Voice of America contest paving the way for her performance.
BENGALURU:
'Fly me to the moon' is a song immortalised by Frank Sinatra. Now, a version of the song by a 12-year-old Bengaluru girl will fly her New York for a performance at the legendary Carnegie Hall later this week.
Nilanjanaa topped the jazz category of the Golden Voice of America contest - open online to contestants around the world - paving the way for her performance.
The excited young girl met NDTV at the Taaqademy - a music school set up by members of the Bengaluru band, Thermal and a Quarter.
Nilanjanaa said, "I had thought of studying Carnatic music - but teachers insisted on my keeping the tala (beat) with my right hand - and I am left handed and found it difficult."
Her parents, Sangeetha and Jayant say their daughter has always been musical and they are thrilled her online entry made it to the top. Her music school is excited too. Rajeev Rajagopal, of Thermal and a Quarter said the aim of the school is to encourage the passion for music in a student.
Band mate Bruce Lee Mani said, "Carnegie Hall! That is usually for people at the peak of a long career - not when they are just starting out!" Nilanjanaa's vocal teacher Shreya thinks her student has a lovely voice.
