60-year-old Joginder Kaur, a heart patient, has been advised by doctors to avoid heat.
Jammu:
Like most parts of North India, it has been an unusually hot summer in Jammu this year, with temperatures crossing 40 degrees on most days in the last one month. What's making matters worse is eight to 10 hour long daily power cuts.
60-year-old Joginder Kaur, a heart patient, has been advised by doctors to avoid heat, but that simply impossible with the long power cuts.
"I have a fracture in my arm, I am a heart patient, it is very hot and I get very tense, how to live in this hot weather?" asks Ms Kaur.
The unusual heat conditions make it a horrible experience for the people. In the border town of RS Pura, Harbhajan Kaur is living alone these days - long power cuts forced her family to migrate to Jammu city. RS Pura has power cuts up to 20 hours.
"There is no electricity here, electric fans don't work, what to do, only the old are living here and bear it, but children can't bear this heat, that's why children and other family members have moved to the city," she said.
Jammu and Kashmir is always facing a power crisis - it is felt more in the Valley during winters and in Jammu during summers. The total requirement of electricity in Jammu is 1200 megawatts, but only 963 megawatts is available.
The government says it is trying to improve the situation.
"A new order has been passed, every constituency will be immediately provided one crore rupees for repairing the old wires to bring immediate relief to people", said Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh.
