Mumbai: A police officer who was allegedly shot at by his junior colleague inside a police station in Mumbai yesterday has died. Assistant Sub Inspector Dilip Shirke had turned the gun on himself after opening fire at his senior officer.

According to the police, Mr Shirke had an argument with Senior Inspector Vilas Joshi over being marked absent in the station diary. When Mr Joshi was leaving the police station, Mr Shirke fired two rounds at him from his service revolver, police said.

One bullet hit the senior inspector on the back and the other hit his orderly on the thigh, police added.

Mr Shirke then shot himself dead.

"Yesterday night, he was absent at the duty. He was marked absent in the Station diary entry. He came today and there was some argument... The Crime Branch will investigate the case," Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said after visiting the police station on Saturday.

All three were rushed to Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital where Mr Shirke was declared dead on arrival. While Senior Inspector Joshi succumbed to his injuries at around 2 am today, the orderly is said to be out of danger.
