Mumbai: Heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning affected weather in most parts of Mumbai since last evening. Schools and colleges have been shut as precaution and flights towards and from the financial capital are hit. The downpour is likely to continue for the next 24 hours, the weather department predicted. Several parts of the city including South Mumbai, Kandivili, Borivali, Andheri and Bhandup, received heavy rainfall. The traffic in Mumbai has slowed down and the local train are hit too. This is the second time in two months that Mumbai is hit with heavy rains.

Here are the highlights of Mumbai rains today:


 
Five people have been killed in Maharahstra's Palghar district in rain-related incidents. All of them drowned in nullahs and rivers in separate incidents.

In Dahanu, at least 50 houses were damaged due to rains and the residents were shifted to different camps.

Water logging was reported in areas like Ghodbunder road which affected vehicular traffic.

Latest Flights Update:  63 Jet Airways, 8 IndiGo and 3 SpiceJet and 1 GoAir flights cancelled due to bad weather at Mumbai airport.

The BMC said water logging was reported at several places, including Hindmata, Sion, Veera Desai Road, Air India Colony, Milan Subway, Andheri Subway, Bandra, Dahisar, Chembur and Mankhurd.

Pumping machines have been pressed into services in these areas, the corporation said.

Incidents of tree and branches falling were reported in 168 places. Besides, there were 21 short-circuits and five cases of wall collapse.


Don't "spread and trust" rumours of cyclone warning: BMC to Mumbaikars

Heavy rains since last night continued today, throwing normal life out of gear in the city and its suburbs, and affecting road and suburban rail services.

As rains threatened to paralyse the city, panic messages on a cyclone today went viral on social media and messaging apps.

The BMC's Disaster Management cell tweeted clarifying that no such warning has been issued by the weather department.

Although Mumbai is trying to build itself into a global financial hub, parts of the city still struggle to cope with annual monsoon rains.

Unabated construction on floodplains and coastal areas, as well as storm-water drains and waterways clogged by plastic garbage have made the city increasingly vulnerable to storms.
A deluge in Mumbai last month killed 14 people, wrecked homes and caused chaos in the city of 20 million people.

Floods in 2005 killed more than 500 people in the city. The majority of deaths occurred in shanty town slums, which are home to more than half of Mumbai's population.

Actress Tanishaa Mukerji prayed for people's safety. She advised people to "not abuse the environment which we take most for granted."
Railways update

The trains on the Western Line are running late by 10 to 15 minutes, according to an official of the Western Railway (WR).

The long distance trains which were regulated and stranded at various locations due to heavy water-logging at Nallasopara, Virar have been cleared, WR said in a statement.

Some intercity trains like Manmad-Mumbai Express, Gujarat Express, Saurashtra Express, Bandra-Terminus Surat Intercity Express and Mumbai Central-Ahmadabad Shatabdi Express have been cancelled, as per the officials of the Central Railway and the Western Railway.
British embassy advises its nationals travelling to Mumbai check their flight schedule. Due to heavy rain in Mumbai some flights to and from Britain have been delayed or cancelled, the advisory said.



No cyclone warning for Mumbai, clarifies Disaster Management Unit of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai

As informed by Met Department, there is no cyclone warning for Mumbai, said the disaster management organisation. They requested  citizens to not spread or trust rumour.
According to MeT department figures, Mumbai suburbs recorded a whopping 304 mm rainfall till this morning, making it the third highest downpour in a single day since the great Mumbai floods when the city experienced 945 mm rains, followed by 316 mm on August 29 this year.
Latest we know about Mumbai rains

- Weather department has removed warning (for heavy rainfall). Intermittent rainfall likely over city and suburbs for next 48 hours.

- Flight operations, remain affected at Mumbai airport. Delays in arrival and departure of flights continue due to fluctuating weather. Main runway to remain shut till 2 pm.

- Traffic movement is smooth in most areas as the waterlogging has reduced significantly.

- Weather department is keeping a close watch on the condition.

- High tide was at 12 noon.

- The dabbawalahs have cancelled their delivery of over two lakh tiffins to office goers in the city. They will not carry out any deliveries today, said their spokesperson.
Mumbai recorded 210 mm rainfall, suburb 303 mm in the last 24 hours till 8:30 am today.
Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the deep sea, a weather department official said.

56 Flights Diverted As Heavy Rains Hit Airport Operations In Mumbai

The skidding of a SpiceJet aircraft on the main runway (09/27) last night have compounded problems at the Mumbai airport as it forced the private airport operator to shift operations to the secondary runway, which can carry out limited operations.

The SpiceJet Boeing 737 aircraft carrying 183 people overshot a wet runway while landing at the airport in rain-hit Mumbai and got stuck in the mud, officials said yesterday, adding that all passengers were safely evacuated.

Traffic update

Traffic is normal, no waterlogging at Tardeo and Kalbadevi
All stranded long distance trains have been cleared. Suburban services also running on all lines of Western Railway from Churchgate to Dahanu Road, said Western Railways through their twitter account.

Traffic is moving normally in both directions on the Eastern Freeway, informed Mumbai police on  their Twitter account.

They added that traffic is normal at Haji Ali Junction, Tardeo Pedder Road and Girgaon Bandstand.

Subarban trains running normal in Churchgate-Virar section except some cases of delay up to 5 -10 minutes, tweeted Western Railways' official account.
There will be no Dabba delivery by Mumbai Dabbawalas due to heavy rains in the city, informed Subhash Talekar, Mumbai Dabbawala Association spokesperson

56 flights diverted from Mumbai airport
The main runway of Mumbai airport still closed; a total of 56 flights have been diverted. Second runway is operational.
High tide expected at 12.03 pm and a low tide at 06.04 pm today, informed Mumbai police on Twitter. 
The local train operations between Virar to Church Gate are on. They have been stopped beyond Virar. They are, however, running at restricted speeds.
There were heavy rains in the city overnight, waterlogging in several parts.
Till 7 pm yesterday, the Mumbai civic body's Disaster Control said the western suburbs received 92.21 mm rains, eastern suburbs recorded 62.45 mm and south Mumbai notched 58.74 mm rainfall.
