Riddled With Potholes, East Mumbai Braces For A Bumpy Ride This Monsoon

The maximum number of potholes in Mumbai during monsoons are reported in the eastern suburbs.

Mumbai: With the monsoon in full force, roads in Mumbai's eastern suburbs are now littered with potholes.

28-year-old Shyamdas Salve had a narrow escape while travelling in Ghatkopar. His bike hit a pothole, causing him and his friend to skid and fall.

"I bruised my hand and legs and had to go to the hospital for treatment, my friend too suffered injuries. After the incident I'm scared to ride bikes, but what's the other option?" asked Mr Salve.

The maximum number of potholes in Mumbai during monsoons are reported in the eastern suburbs. Some of the worst roads are in Mulund, Bhandup and Ghatkopar. According to the civic body's data, nearly 50 potholes here are still unattended.

"In front of my eyes, my friend's son's bike hit a pothole, he lost balance and fell off. A truck ran over him and he died on the spot," said Bhandup resident Kirti Shah.

The local legislator from Shiv Sena, the party which runs the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC, claims the situation is better than last year.

"About 90 per cent of potholes in the area have been covered. The rest are in T junctions like the LBS Marg where although potholes are covered, the cement gets washed away every year. The BMC is working on filling these potholes," said Ashok Patil, Shiv Sena legislator.

The BMC claims that across Mumbai only 110 potholes remain to be fixed. A number that is disputed by many.
