Navy's first indigenous stealth ship, INS Shivalik

It's a ship that is designed to escape detection by normal radars and surveillance equipment. Special aerodynamics, equipment and material is used in designing and building these ships which makes it very difficult to monitor their movements. That's why they are called 'stealth frigates.'

  • INS Shivalik is the first warship built by India designed to escape detection by normal radars and surveillance equipment and was launched on April 18, 2003 and finally commissioned on April 29, 2010.
  • Built at Mumbai's Mazgaon Docks, the Shivalik has credible defence against nuclear, chemical and biological attacks. The warship has powerful communication and networking systems and a sophisticated missile system. Two more warships are also currently being built in Mumbai.

  • Shivalik is the first IN ship to have a Combined Diesel or Gas Turbine (CODOG) propulsion plant. She has an ATM based Integrated Ship Data Network (AISDN) which serves as the foundation for the external and internal communication systems. The new Total Atmosphere Control System (TACS) for the ship's air-conditioning and ventilation are different from earlier designs in terms of design concepts. (Source: Wikipedia)
  • The Shivalik class warships will be the mainstay frigates of the Indian Navy for at least the next 50 years.
