Puducherry:
Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh, accompanied by Chief Minister N Rangasamy, Speaker V Sabapathy, legislators and officials pulled the chariot of the Sengazhuneer Amman temple on the occasion of its annual car festival at nearby coastal village of Veerampattinam today.
They later offered worship at the sanctum sanctorum and other deities, temple sources said.
It is a tradition in Puducherry since pre-merger days for the Head of the State to join the common people and drag the temple chariots at annual temple festivals.
Rangasamy later inaugurated a free food feeding programme at the temple. A local holiday had been declared today in Ariyankuppam commune panchayat within whose limits the temple is situated.
The car festival of the temple takes place every year on the fifth Friday of Tamil month Aadi-Aavani (July and August).
