In video, three cops are seen beating a family in full public view in Tamil Nadu's Chengam
Chengam:
Three policemen armed with sticks are seen raining blows on a man, his wife and son in full public view in Chengam in Tamil Nadu, in a mobile phone video captured by a witness.
Dozens of people at the crowded market area watched as the family was assaulted.
Raja, an autorickshaw driver, his wife Usha and their 17-year-old son were reportedly on their way to a wedding when the couple had an argument.
Some policemen went up to them to ask what the commotion was about. They were told by the son that it was a family dispute.
Witnesses say the response enraged the policemen who started beating the teenager and his father with sticks. In the video, which went viral online, Usha is seen trying to plead with the policemen but failing, and getting thrashed in the process.
At one point, say witnesses, the teenager asked why the police were interfering in a family dispute. He received multiple blows in response. All three were taken to hospital with injuries.
Local people later protested against police brutality and blocked the road for two hours demanding the arrest of the policemen.
''They did not have the patience to listen to anyone. It was just arrogance of khaki uniform and brutality in force. Nobody had a chance to intervene,'' said a bystander.
District police chief R Ponni brought in a big force to end the road blockade and promised action against the cops, who have been transferred for now.
