PM Modi, campaigning for his party, also brought up the help extended by the Centre to the state during the recent floods.
Chennai:
With polling in Tamil Nadu 10 days away, BJP's poster boy Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tried to strike an emotional chord with voters in Chennai, citing his government's efforts to sort the crisis faced by Lankan Tamils.
Mr Modi, campaigning for his party, also brought up the help extended by the Centre to the state during the recent floods.
"I'm the first Indian Prime Minister to go to Jaffna to improve the condition of Lankan Tamils. 30,000 of the promised 50,000 houses have been handed over to Lankan Tamils...The centre responded with air force and all other help during recent floods in Chennai," Mr Modi said at a rally."
The Prime Minister also listed what he called as his government's achievements over the last two years. "Our hard work has made India economically a shining star in turbulent times. I can take pride that we've built toilets for girls in thousands of schools," he said.
The BJP is yet to make its debut in the Tamil Nadu assembly. With just 5.4 percent vote share the BJP alliance in the state has turned weaker with the exit of actor Vijaykant's DMDK and the PMK.
A similar emotional approach by Mr Modi during last Lok Sabha polls fetched the party two seats. But this time he's banking on his performance to break new grounds.
Though the BJP and ruling AIADMK fought against each other in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, later both parties worked together. Although, this time too they are at daggers are drawn, Mr Modi refrained from targeting Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa or her party.
