Chennai: Many parts of Tamil Nadu including capital Chennai were pounded by heavy rain on Tuesday, disrupting rail, air and road traffic. This is the worst rain that the city has seen in nearly a hundred years, the weather office said. The city is slowly returning to normalcy with airport operations resuming today after 5 days of water-logging.

A former French colony known for its systematic town planning, many areas of Puducherry now present a picture of devastation with close to 400 houses damaged by the rains.


Supply of fuel in Chennai has taken a hit due to "logistic problems" faced by oil companies even as availability of essential commodities like milk, water and vegetables remain affected across Tamil Nadu today. Since most of the places across the city and its suburbs have been cut off due to heavy rain, oil tankers were unable to transport fuel, PTI quoted the officials of Indian Oil Corporation.

The US has expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the people affected by the worst floods in Chennai and has offered assistance to address the humanitarian challenge "especially in the case of strong partners like India".


Sixteen flights to and 18 arriving from Chennai were listed as cancelled at Singapore's Changi airport here today in wake of the worst floods that has affected normal life in the Indian state, according to the airport website. Yesterday, 14 flights to and from Chennai were cancelled, media reports said.

Nearly 4,000 people living on the banks of Adayar river in Chennai have been evacuated to safer zones, officials say. The river is in spate following discharge of excess water from Chembarambakkam reservoir.

"Two sections of Railway tracks badly affected - Chennai Egmore Villupuram section and Chennai Central Gudur section. Because of these two sections getting affected, train operations are badly hit. More train cancellations likely on Wednesday. Appeal passengers to check their train status, we're trying to inform people," says Anil Kumar Saxena, Additional DG (PR), Railways.

A person, Murali, from Chennai has told NDTV that he, along with 13 others, is stuck in neck deep water in a bus, which is stranded. Nobody can come out of the bus.
