The state government is taking serious efforts to revive Nokia plant.
Chennai:
The Tamil Nadu government is working to revive Nokia's cellphone making plant at Sriperumbudur outside Chennai.
The AIADMK government's revival plan was presented in the state Governor K Rosaiah's maiden address in the Tamil Nadu assembly after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa won a second consecutive term.
"The state government is taking serious efforts to revive Nokia plant. A team is holding talks with Foxconn in Taiwan. Nokia revival issue has also been taken up with the Centre at the highest level," said Mr Rosaiah.
Although Microsoft bought Nokia two years ago, the Sriperumbudur facility wasn't part of the deal due to a pending tax dispute between Nokia and the Income Tax department. Nokia denies any wrongdoing.
Consequently, Nokia had to shut down the mobile manufacturing plant and around 18,000 people lost their jobs. The company had offered a compensation package ahead of the closure.
Over the last few years, experts say Tamil Nadu did not witness industrial development and this attempt, if successful, experts say, could be a good beginning to spur growth.
However, analysts say it is not time for celebration yet. China, they say, has emerged as a cheaper destination for mobile manufacturing and they are not sure any company will be interested to take over Nokia's plant.
