Bengalis are celebrating Poila Baishakh on Saturday, the arrival of a brand new year. The festival brings with it frenzied shopping for new clothes and the all-important visit to that favourite sweet shop for the latest innovation. Besides Durga Puja, if there is one other time that the Bengalis virtually get themselves a new wardrobe, it is during Poila Baishakh. Even the politicians are taking a break in their campaign to usher in the new year.
