It was in the summer of 1999 that war broke out in Kargil, Drass and Batalik. Over the next 63 days, 583 officers, JCOs and jawans were killed, defending territory along the Line of Control. Nearly 20 army battalions get battle honours and theatre honours - the highest award for army units.
