Ahmedabad:
The heritage department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is to restore a 300-year-old step-well in Bapunagar area of the city. The civic body has started the restoration work along with a plan to create a garden around the well to increase its beauty.
The single entry step-well which was operational 35 years ago now wears a deserted look. The architecture of the well is simple and thus is not likely to attract tourists or visitors.
"The step-well is single entry five-story structure similar to Bhadra fort Vav. The tiles and stones of the well make it look like 250-300 years old," said an official of the heritage department.
The well's architecture indicates that it could have been built as a rest room for passers-by, said another official. The residents believe that it was built by Banjara community.
Ramprasad Rajput, a resident of Jamnanagar near the step-well, stated that 35 years back when he moved to this house, the vav used to be operational. "The vav was used for irrigation purpose by the farmers," he added saying that gradually the farms vanished with increasing habitation in the area and due to this the well dried up. It resulted in accumulation of garbage and filth in the area.
The heritage department has already restored some parts of it and second phase will begin very soon. AMC has restored the outer side of the well and excavation will soon begin.
"We have already floated the tenders for the next phase of the work," said PD Patel, assistant engineer of the heritage department of AMC. He added that the department will carry out excavation till water comes up provided the internal structure of the well allows the same. Having built a compound wall to protect the monument, AMC aims to create a garden so as to increase its face-value along with beauty.
