An organisation fighting for the rights of abused husbands had a fine of Rs1 lakh slapped by a division bench of the Gujarat high court on Thursday.
Dashrath Devda, president of the Akhil Bhartiya Patni Atyachar Virodhi Sangh, appeared as
party-in-person (appeared on his own without hiring a lawyer) before the chief justice of the Gujarat high court. He had filed a PIL seeking protection of men against the misuse of laws by women.
When Devda's turn came he had to face the ire of chief justice SJ Mukhopadhaya.
The chief justice fined him Rs1 lakh for filing 'frivolous' petition in an attempt to get publicity.
When Devda tried to put his side of the story the chief justice said, "You are wasting the court's time. If you say a word further you will be fined Rs2 lakh." The judge then imposed a fine of Rs1 lakh on Devda, who is chairman of the Akhil Bhartiya Patni Atyachar Virodhi Sangh.
The court also said that if Devda failed to deposit the fine in two month it will be recovered by the court.
Devda's organisation works with husbands who claim to have been abused by their wives using the laws for protection of women.
The organisation had moved a PIL for amendment of laws related to women. They pleaded that there should be laws to protect a man and his family from false cases filed against them under various sections of Indian Penal Code.
Devda stated in the petition that by using various sections such as 498 (c), 406, 304 (b) and various other sections of laws related to maintenance and divorce, women are misusing their power against men and their families.
