Bring Rs 1 lakh or abort child: In-laws to Ahmedabad woman

Ahmedabad: For those who thought dowry harassment is finally becoming a thing of the past, here is yet another rude jolt.

After a woman doctor recently committed suicide to get rid of her allegedly greedy in-laws, another woman in Ahmedabad was allegedly kicked out of her house by her in-laws. Her father and brother-in-law work with the Indian Space Research Centre (ISRO). The woman is two months pregnant.

Cops said that the woman was told to bring Rs 1 lakh from her parents, failing which, she would have to abort her child. She was then severely beaten.

According to the Vastrapur police which registered a case in this regard on Saturday, the woman resides with her in-laws at ISRO colony in Satellite. She has reportedly named every member of the family, except her father-in-law.

She stated that on Saturday, she was beaten up by her husband Praveen Parmar, mother-in-law Somi, brothers-in-law Lalit and Hitesh (the latter works with ISRO), and one Rakesh. However, it appears that the woman was initially reluctant to lodge a complaint.

"She was beaten up by her in-laws on Saturday morning. They were forcing her to abort the child, or bring Rs1 lakh in cash from her parents otherwise. When she refused, she was kicked out of the house. She somehow managed to reach her parents' home in Ambawadi, from where her mother took her to VS Hospital's gynecology ward," said the cops.

"Initially, the victim's family was reluctant to lodge a complaint, but a doctor of the hospital informed the police. During the inquiry, the woman broke down and narrated her ordeal," said a police source.
