Child dies for lack of medical help

Ahmedabad: A nine-year-old boy died on Saturday after he failed to get proper medical treatment. His parents had relied on an ojha (faith healer) but by the time they realised their mistake, it was too late.

Krishna Nayaka, 9, a resident of Amroli village, was suffering from high fever and vomiting for two days before he succumbed to his illness. His parents took him to one ojha after the other, in hope that their son would be treated, but it didn't help, and the child lost consciousness on Saturday.

Frightened by the boy's condition, his parents brought him to the new civil hospital on Saturday afternoon, where he was declared brought dead by doctors. The child's mother fainted following his death.

Duryodhan Nayaka, Krishna's father, a looms worker, said, "We thought Krishna was possessed by a spirit. To relieve him, we went to an ojha".
