Cops find beer cans worth Rs 5 lakh hidden under cumin powder

Ahmedabad: With New Year festivities round the corner and demand for booze soaring, city cops unearthed two liquor consignments in separate incidents on Monday. In one incident, DCB sleuths caught a man with a major consignment carrying 3,144 cans of beer worth Rs 5.89 lakh in a mini truck. The beer cans were hidden in a sack of cumin powder.

The cops were surprised because the modus operandi employed was the first of its kind by the bootlegger. Officials identified the man as Rakesh Soni, 27, a resident of Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. Sources said that the consignment arrived from the neighbouring state. According to sub-inspector JD Purohit, the load was to be delivered for New Year parties.

In another incident, Naroda police caught a car carrying 25 crates of IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) worth Rs70,000 on Monday. Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted a car near Naroda ring road.

During checking cops found that the consignment was allegedly being taken to a man identified as Dimple in Odhav. Police officials said the liquor was adulterated. Cops have arrested two persons in this connection -- Hitesh Gatiya and Ramesh Morey.
