Ahmedabad:
Thirty-year-old constable Haren Kumar Gadhvi hardly imagined that a few pegs of liquor and a friend's call would cost him dearly. Late on Sunday night when he reached Samarpan Tower near Pallav crossroads in Naranpura police station area to meet his friend, he got a thrashing he would never forget. He paid this price for refusing to foot the bill for something he had eaten.
According to Naranpura police, on Sunday around 9:30 pm Haren reached Samarpan to meet his friend Rohit Gadhvi at a laari. At that time there were several people eating there and the place was buzzing. According to police sources, Haren allegedly told a man to vacate his (the latter's) seat and let him sit - an action which resulted in a scuffle.
However, a couple of laariwalas who witnessed the incident said that the two had some omelets but refused to pay the money for them. This irked the laariwala who was asking for Rs20, the cost of the snack. But Haren allegedly didn't listen to him and did not pay his dues.
"Haren was under the influence of alcohol and since he is a cop he started shouting and abusing the man. Soon, a group of laariwalas gathered and thrashed him and his friend Rohit severely. Haren had gone there to sort out an issue with his policeman-friend," said a source.
However, more trouble lay in store for the duo. Sources said that joint commissioner of police, sector-one, Satish Sharma was passing through the area and seeing the frenzy, he began to disperse the crowd. Sharma confirmed that Haren had been badly beaten up and had been admitted to Sola Civil Hospital.
The Naranpura police have lodged a case against Haren. Sub-inspector NM Nayak examined Haren in the hospital where it was confirmed that he had consumed alcohol. Sources added that the constable's friend Rohit had been booked in a money laundering case in 2008.
