Falling rupee hits vacation plans in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Among other things, the falling rupee has also hit the vacation plans for several families. The Gujarati community accounted for almost 40 per cent of the total outbound tourists from the country, but the rupee devaluation has forced a change of plan for the globetrotters from the state.

The Ahmedabad-based Thaker family has been planning to go abroad for a vacation since six months. The family had shelved its plans for a trip to south-east Asia in March when the rupee hit the 52-mark.

"All of a sudden the dollar went up to 52 rupees; so we decided to delay our trip. We thought we will go on holidays during the Diwali break, assuming that it could go back to the Rs 50 level. But with the dollar now almost at Rs 65, we have no other option but to dump our foreign trip,'' said Dipak Thaker, a businessman.

The Thakers are now looking for a short domestic trip, but that too has its concerns.

"Lots of middle-class families like us will now prefer domestic destinations. We fear the rise in demand could increase the price for that too," says Mr Thaker's wife Neelam, a doctor.

"For middle-class families, we used to have tailor-made international packages, which used to cost Rs 35,000 to 40,000. But now the price of that foreign package has gone up to almost Rs 55,000,'' says Deepak Jaiswal, Managing director, AERIO, a travel firm.
