Ahmedabad:
The special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the Gujarat High Court to investigate the Ishrat Jahan encounter case has been granted permission to interrogate former ATS chief DG Vanzara and the then ACP (crime branch) NK Amin.
Assistant commissioner of police VR Dholakia, who is attached to the Ishrat SIT, had filed an application before the special CBI court for permission to record the statements of Vanzara and Amin. Observing that it was important for the SIT to record the statements of the two suspended police officers in the interest of justice, the court gave its permission for their interrogation in connection with the Ishrat case.
Vanzara and Amin are currently lodged in Sabarmati jail as accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. It was necessary to take the special CBI court's permission as the Sohrabuddin case is being investigated by the central bureau of investigation (CBI).
Ishrat Jahan and three of her friends - Javed Ghulam Sheikh alias Pranesh Kumar Pillai, Amjad Ali alias Rajkumar Akbar Ali Rana and Jisan Johar Abdul Gani - were killed by police officers of the Ahmedabad DCB in an encounter on the outskirts of the city on June 15, 2004.
