Ahmedabad:
When they started out running on the streets, these young boys were often mistaken for madmen, and nearly stoned by the citizens. However, come December 26, and the scenario is set to change, as denizens are all set to join the organisers of Sabarmati Marathon for a dream run.
Entrepreneurs, Vishwas Bhamburkar and Lihas Trivedi, have near about covered the spectrum around the globe and their runner's high syndrome drove them towards organising a marathon for the city. "We have been running for nearly ten years now and hence, always wanted a marathon of our own for the city. This kind of sport does not cost anything, it only returns in abundance," Bhamburkar said.
The duo closed the registrations on December 20 and on counting the number of people enrolled for the marathon, they realised that the number was huge. "We had kept two modes of entry - online and physical form submission. The total number of entries has reached 8000, which is likely to be the second largest marathon in the country.
Also, around 45 to 50 international athletes are expected to partake in our Sabarmati Marathon. However, Narendra Modi, chief minister of Gujarat, flagging off the marathon, is like an icing on the cake," Bhamburkar added. Bhamburkar claims that Sabarmati Marathon is probably the only marathon wherein organisers will also run alongside the participants.
He informs that the prize distribution ceremony of the same, will take place in the evening, ensuring audience and participant's involvement in the overall event. Coming to the name of the marathon, Bhamburkar said, "Sabarmati River signifies the existence of the old city of Ahmedabad and also the developing face of the city. This is the how the name Sabarmati Marathon comes from." The marathon is set to start and end at Sabarmati and will cover areas such as Kankaria Lake, Bhadra Fort, Siddhi Saiyeed ni Jaali, BRTS route and more.
