Warship on fire after collision

A major fire is being fought on board a naval warship off the Mumbai harbour. The ship has been evacuated.

  • After nearly eight hours, a major fire on board a naval warship has been put out off the Mumbai harbour.

The fire began at 4.30 am on the INS Vindhyagiri. The same ship had been hit the previous evening by a merchant vessel, the MV Nordlake.
  • The INS Vindhyagiri had 300 tons of fuel on board. Everyone on board was evacuated. The navy's fire brigade has teamed up the Mumbai fire brigade to fight the fire.
  • The Navy has complained that the merchant ship did not follow standard operating procedure.

The Vindhyagiri was entering the harbour on Sunday evening at 5 pm and the Nordlake was on its way out when it hit the warship near the Sunk Rock Lighthouse.
  • The MV Nordlake reportedly tried to move out of the way of another ship, the Sea Eagle, and in the process, rammed into the Vindhyagiri.
