Allahabad brothers arrested for threatening to blow up office

Allahabad: Two brothers have been arrested from the outskirts of the city for allegedly having made a prank call to a news channel in Delhi last week threatening to blow up their office besides triggering blasts in the city, police said.

The two youths, Sunny Shukla (23) and Shammi Shukla, both engineering students, were arrested from Phaphamau locality in Soraon police station area of the district's trans-Ganga region last night, a police spokesman said. He said the anonymous call was received by the news channel at its Delhi office on December 9, two days after a blast in Varanasi.

The caller had said that the channel's "head office will be blown up shortly and blasts will be triggered in the city of Allahabad".

The anonymous call had ended with the statement "rok sako to rok lo" (stop this from happening if you can), the spokesman said, adding that the channel brought the matter to the notice of Delhi Police which traced the call to Allahabad.

The message was passed on to the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh, who ordered an investigation into the matter, following which the brother duo, both of them students of engineering at a private college here, was arrested, the spokesman said.

Upon interrogation, the youths allegedly confessed to have made the call "for fun", the spokesman said, adding that a case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the IPC and they have been sent to jail.
