Amritsar: Two air-conditioned bogies of a train coming from Saharsa in Bihar to Amritsar caught fire near a station, nearly 30 kilometers from Amritsar, on Tuesday night caught fire but there were no causalities.
DCP, Punjab Police, Kostav Sharma present at the spot said two coaches of the train were completely damaged when it reached near Mannawalla station.
All the passengers were saved in time as the Garib Rath train was stopped when a sepoy of RPF noticed smoke and fire in the two coaches, pulled the chain and then informed the engine driver on phone.
The DCP said the the fire broke out when the air conditioning unit reportedly got heated up and caused short circuit.
All the passengers travelling in the two compartments were evacuated and immediately afterwards a massive fire engulfed the coaches.
The DCP said the two burnt coaches and two other compartments were detached from rest of the train and sent to Amritsar.
