Seventeen packets of heroin with street value of Rs 85 crore along with arms and ammunition were seized by the Border Security Force near the Indo-Pak border today.
Each packet weighed one kilogramme and the total value of the seized heroin was Rs 85 crore in the drug market, BSF Inspector General (Punjab Frontier) Ajay Kumar Tomar said.
BSF jawans noticed suspicious movements of some persons along the border security fence near village Daoke at around 4.30 am, he said.
They were trying to insert a plastic pipe through the fence into the Indian border, Tomar said.
When challenged, they fired at BSF troopers triggering a brief exchange of fire, he said.
Taking advantage of dense fog enveloping the area, they managed to escape to Pakistan, the IG said.
The BSF conducted a thorough search of the area and found 17 packets of heroin, two pistols, a magazine and eight rounds of ammunition besides a mobile set and a sim, he said.
