Meeting held to discuss steps to make Amritsar eco- friendly

Amritsar: Aiming to make Amritsar eco- friendly, over 200 representatives from religious bodies, city administration, environmentalists, educationists and business leaders on Saturday discussed their views in a meeting in Amritsar.

The gathering was organised by Washington-based body EcoSikh, which also celebrated its 3rd anniversary yesterday.

"The meeting aims at making the city eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable...various organisations have come forward to take concrete individual and collaborative steps to reduce carbon footprints," EcoSikh president Rajwant Singh said.

Among the organisations participated in the event are SGPC, business group Celebration Mall, DAV educational group and Punjab Energy Development Agency.

It was decided that saplings will be planted across the city to increase green patches.

EcoSikh has proposed a six-point agenda for the campaign in which various sections of civil society and administration made commitments towards sustainable infrastructure, water conservation, recycling and better waste management, alternate energy usage, introducing public transport, increasing green cover and open spaces, and sharing information on strategies to promote green drive.
