A college student in Andhra Pradesh was killed, allegedly by her father, a day after she turned 18. The police said it was a case of honour killing - her father suspected that she had a relationship with a man. He has been arrested.
Last Saturday, Chandrika -- who lived with her parents and younger sister at a village in Krishna district -- celebrated her big day by cutting a cake. The teenager, an undergraduate student of pharmacy, was in a happy mood when she returned home after the celebrations.
The police said the next day, her father spotted her talking to someone on her mobile phone. He overheard her conversation and suspected that his daughter was talking to a man she had a relationship with.
In a fit of rage, Kottaiah allegedly hit Chandrika on the head with a wooden handle of an axe. The teen died on the spot.
The police officer investigating the case believes the teen wanted to marry the man and had sought her family's approval now that she turned 18. The police suspect this was not acceptable to her father.
Villagers said the man was worried that the family's honour would be compromised by the teenager's relationship and murdered her.
