Anti-Narcotics Cell opened in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: In a bid to effectively tackle the growing menace of drug peddling, a specialised Anti-Narcotics Cell was opened in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan, who inaugurated the cell on the premises of Detective Department, said it would play a major role in the fight against drug menace.

Pointing out that some students of African countries visiting Hyderabad on student VISA were found to be indulging in drug (including cocaine) peddling by selling the same to youth, celebrities and elite sections of the society, the Hyderabad Police chief said the police would now keep a strict vigil on the activities of foreign students.

"Around 5,000 students, mainly from African countries, study in different universities here. Raids will be intensified to verify whether the foreigners staying in the city hold valid documents," he warned.

Explaining the functioning of the Anti-Narcotics Cell, Khan said it would have three wings of Technical, Surveillance and Investigation. The first two would carry out call analysis and maintain surveillance at vulnerable places while the Investigation wing would help in taking up effective investigation.

In the last two years, Hyderabad Police busted 19 drug rackets, Khan said adding that out of the 53 accused involved in the drug cases, 43 have been arrested including 21 foreigners.

"We now have control on drug peddlers. But, it was not only the police, but the responsibility of the society including parents and educational institutions to check and keep a watch on their wards," Khan added.
