Kerala Governor Sheila Dikshit meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi
New Delhi:
Sheila Dikshit, who has so far ignored the government's suggestions to quit as the Governor of Kerala, met the Prime Minister and Home Minister Rajnath Singh today, but said she had not been asked by them to resign.
Ms Dikshit, 76, described her meetings with the two top BJP leaders as "good" and said they were courtesy calls to the new administration.
A few weeks ago, her son, Congressman Sandeep Dikshit confirmed that Home Secretary Anil Goswami had phoned her to indicate that the new government of PM Modi would like to replace her with its own appointee. Ms Dikshit reportedly indicated that she would not cooperate.
Ms Dikhsit served three terms as the chief minister of Delhi. She was controversially appointed Kerala Governor in March by Dr Manmohan Singh's government after she led the Congress to a devastating result in the Delhi state election in December. Critics said that her posting to Kerala was engineered to protect her from a possible investigation about the alleged misuse of funds for the Commonwealth Games, which were held in the capital in 2010.
Sources in the government have indicated that Ms Dikshit may be transferred to a state in the North East if she does not resign.
"I do not know what will happen in next 10 days or 10 months," she told reporters when asked about that possibility.
Following the change of guard at the Centre, five governors have resigned with the ruling BJP nudging them out because they were appointed by the previous government.
