Mamata: Way Maoist leader Azad was killed not right
Kolkata: Slamming the Left at a rally in Lalgarh on Monday, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said the way Maoist leader Azad was killed was not right and asked for a probe into his death.

C Rajakumar alias Azad was killed in an encounter by state police in Andhra Pradesh on July 2.  Following his death, Maoist sympathisers had filed a petition in the High court alleging that he was killed in a fake encounter.

Banerjee also blamed CPM leaders for the violence in the area. "After 34 years of rule, why is there no hospital in Lalgrah," she said, adding, "I don't understand the language of guns. We have always resorted to peace and have always won by democratic means."

Maoist-backed PCPA as well as top Maoist leader Kishenji had last week said that they extended their support to Mamata's rally.

Apart from Trinamool leaders, several Maoist sympathisers like writer activist Mahasweta Devi, Swami Agnivesh and Medha Patkar also attended the rally.

CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat had on Sunday alleged that the rally exposed the tie-up between the Trinamool and the Maoists and the Centre should spell out its stand on it.

On July 21, alleging that democracy has been stifled in various places of West Midnapore district by the CPM, Banerjee had said, "We will not hold the rally under the Trinamool banner but Santras Birodhi Mancha to build up a larger democratic movement. For the wake of democracy we must rise above political interests."

Meanwhile, one person was injured after Trinamool and CPM workers clashed over tearing off of posters of the rally on Sunday, the police said.

The incident occurred at Moupal under Salbani police station in West Midnapore district.

Mamata Banerjee had last visited West Midnapore district on January 15 for a rally at the district headquarters town Jhargram where she gave a call to the Maoists to come forward for talks and give up arms. (With PTI inputs)
