New Delhi: Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of former union minister Shashi Tharoor, did not commit suicide but was murdered, said Delhi Police Chief BS Bassi today.

"We have registered a case of murder," he said. (Sunanda Pushkar, Wife of Shashi Tharoor, Was Killed: Police)

Mr Bassi said a new medical report based on the autopsy of Ms Pushkar, who was 51 when she died, indicated that "her death was unnatural and it was because of poisoning".

He added, "The poison could have been administered orally or could also have injected, so keeping all these factors in mind, the case has been registered."

Sources in the police say that the new report was handed over late last month to the police by a team of doctors who conducted a post-mortem on Ms Pushkar at Delhi's famous AIIMS hospital.

"Some new facts have emerged that necessitated a murder inquiry," said sources in the Delhi Police. (Not Clear if Sunanda Pushkar Was Murdered: Congress)

Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in her five-star hotel room in the capital last January, two days after she alleged on Twitter that her husband had been having an affair with a Pakistani journalist.

Before she died, she appeared on television with Mr Tharoor; the couple said they were "happily married."
