New Delhi:
The NHRC on Tuesday sought a report from Maharashtra government on a complaint from TDP alleging that party chief Chandrababu Naidu was "ill-treated" by state police during his recent arrest.
In the complaint, the TDP also alleged that partymen led by Naidu were "ill-treated" at the time of arrest and also in judicial custody and were "not provided even minimum facilities".
Besides, when the arrested parytmen were being taken to an "unknown" destination, the police resorted to "unwarranted" lathicharge on them and many of the legislators were manhandled by the police, the party alleged.
This came at a time when the Nanded police filed an affidavit in a court withdrawing charges against Naidu.
Forwarding a copy of the petition to the state Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, the Commission directed them to look into the allegations of "inhuman" treatment of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders and submit a report within two weeks, the NHRC said in a statement.
"These directions have come on a complaint filed today by M V Mysura Reddy, Rajya Sabha MP and the other leaders of TDP," it said.
The complainants said Naidu and the other legislators of TDP accompanying him were arrested by the Maharashtra Police on the July 16 when they were going to visit the site of Babhli project, the Commission noted.
