Uttarakhand: All 550 stranded in Jungle Chatti near Kedarnath evacuated

Jungle Chatti, Uttarakhand: All 550 people, who were left stranded in Jungle Chatti yesterday - located between Gaurikund and Rambara in the Kedarnath axis - have been evacuated, rescue officials have told NDTV. Search operations are being conducted now to check if anybody has been left behind.

Around 1,000 people were found stranded here early Saturday, following which the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) transported more than 400 people with the help of choppers yesterday. These people were taken to Gore Gaon, from where they were evacuated.

With air sorties being disrupted due to adverse weather conditions this morning, ground operations were on in full swing to rescue those stranded due to last week's floods.

To evacuate the remaining near 550 pilgrims today, a land route between Jungle Chatti and Gore Gaon was established. It was a tough five-six kilometre long walk and the jawans helped people across.

Meanwhile, people in the holy town of Badrinath continue to be airlifted. Over 2,000 people out of the 8,000 here have already been evacuated today.

A back-up land route for evacuating those stranded near Badrinath has also been created. The 40 kilometre long stretch is, however, a very tough route to cover for the elderly as it requires one to walk at least 19 kilometres. The remaining 21 kilometres can be travelled by cars of locals.
