A Pakistani lawyer says a judge has freed anine-month old boy accused of attempting to murder police in the eastern cityof Lahore after police withdrew charges.

 

Lawyer Irfan Tarar says the judge announced the decisionafter Saturday's court hearing during which police said it had dropped thecharge against the boy.

 

He says police had registered the case against the toddlerand his family members without investigating the matter and the judge hadsought an explanation.

 

The case highlights the country's dysfunctional criminaljustice system where even children are not immune from questionable legaldecisions.

 

The toddler was brought to court last Friday as part of aninvestigation relating to an incident where residents in his neighbourhoodclashed with police.
