The Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu police to register a case of alleged land grabbing against the wife of former union minister, late NVN Somu.
Passing the order on a petition by D Munusamy of Red Hills area on the outskirts of the city, Justice T Mathivanan said that after registering the case, Tiruvallur District Central Crime Branch (land grabbing) should probe and file a final report, if a prima facie case was made out within six weeks.
The Tiruvallur SP should probe the allegation and ensure that the chargesheet was filed within a time frame to be stipulated by the court, the court said.
The petitioner sought registration of a land grabbing case against Umadevi, wife of former Union Minister of State for Defence NVN Somu, who was killed in a helicopter crash in 1997.
Munusamy, an agriculturist, submitted that in September 1993, he had purchased 85 cents of land in the village from one Durai Babu.
The petitioner said the sale deed was registered in August 2004 and a patta assigned to him in February 2005.
He said that in September last, after a gap of 18 years, Umadevi had lodged a complaint with the police claiming that the property had been sold to her in February 1989 itself.
He and Durai Babu were named in the complaint. He said that whenever he obtained an encumbrance certificate, no encumbrance was revealed against the property.
The petitioner said that according to the village records, the property stood in his name. During the laying of a four-lane road, three cents of his property were acquired and he was paid a compensation, he said.
Charging Umadevi and Durai Babu with attempting to cheat him, the petitioner said he had given a complaint to the police in October 2011 but the police seemed reluctant to register a case, following which he had filed the present petition.
